High speed chase ends in arrest
Daniel Kozlowski

WEBSTER—A Duluth, MN man is in custody after he led several officers on a chase, with speeds up to 95 MPH, Friday morning.

Law enforcement officers first picked up the trail of the 30 year-old Daniel T. Kozlowski, and the dark-colored minivan he was driving, after he allegedly ran two cars off Highway 35 north of Danbury.

A Burnett County Sheriff’s Deputy began following Kozlowski at County Road U north of Webster.

According to the incident report, Kozlowski realized he was being followed by a sheriff’s deputy, put the upper half of his body out the window of the van, faced the squad car and flipped off the deputy. This action caused Kozlowski to swerve on the road.

The deputy attempted to get the vehicle to stop, but Kozlowski sped away. When the deputy activated his siren, Kozlowski again flipped him off.

The chase reached 95 MPH as the vehicles passed Fox Run Golf Course. At this time, a state patrol squad attempted to intercept Kozlowski. He swerved toward the trooper forcing the trooper to take to the ditch to avoid a collision. The maneuver caused Kozlowski to almost lose control of the van and was serving in both lanes of traffic.

As the chase headed into Webster, with speeds still around 90 MPH, Webster Police Chief Mike Spafford joined the pursuit.

South of Webster, Koslowski pulled behind the Meenon Town Garage, attempting to hide. When officers pulled into the area to apprehend him, Koslowski was able to return to Highway 35 and head toward Siren.

Siren police officers had deployed road spikes south of Midtown Road. Kozlowski, using the shoulder, drove around the spikes and continued to head south. With four squads chasing him, Kozlowski ran over road spikes set up at County Road KK but kept going.

Finally, the suspect pulled into the mini-mall at 24647 Highway 35 where officers took Kozlowski out of the vehicle at gunpoint, at which point he passed out and fell to the ground unconscious.

Kozlowski was arrested for operating while intoxicated, but could additionally be charged with first degree reckless homicide, fleeing an officer, battery to an law enforcement officer and first degree recklessly endangering safety. By Todd Beckmann, Sentinel News Editor.
